Il dottorato di ricerca is the third cycle of QF-EHEA (Qualifications Framework for the European Higher Education Area) and 8° level of EQF (European Qualifications Framework).

The Ph.D. provides the necessary skills to carry out highly qualified research activities at universities, public bodies or private entities, also for the purpose of accessing careers in public administrations and integrating highly innovative professional paths.

Il Dottorato in «Sanità e scienze sperimentali veterinarie» has three curriculum:

  • Curriculum 1: Biotechnology applied to veterinary sciences: use and development of molecular, cellular and diagnostic techniques in the veterinary field
  • Curriculum 2: Veterinary public health and food safety - tools for veterinary public health and the official control of food of animal origin
  • Curriculum 3: Clinical sciences and veterinary diagnostic - prevention, diagnostics and therapeutic protocols of diseases of pets or animals of zootechnical interest.

The training activities are carried out mainly during the first two years when the doctoral student must develop scientific skills and ability to carry out both research and dissemination of the results achieved (through presentation of works at conferences or congresses and publication of the partial and total results of the research carried out). The third year is mainly dedicated to carrying out the thesis work.

Epidemiology and statistics - Provides knowledge to deal with epidemiological surveillance in the field of animal health and hygiene of zootechnical productions; the elaboration of emergency plans for epidemic diseases and participation in their management; consultancy and assistance to breeders for animal health and for the development and hygienic improvement of animal production; technical-scientific and operational support to veterinary pharmacovigilance action; use of epidemiological methods in the fields of animal and public health; design, implementation and management of information systems and databases of veterinary interest.

Course in Research Management, knowledge of research systems and funding systems at University level

The University offers a course with modules aimed at providing basic skills for the management of research projects, from the planning phase to the drafting and management of financial plans, monitoring and reporting. The courses include a final exam. Training may be supplemented by internships in research and research funding structures.

  • Course in valorisation of research results and intellectual property provided at University level

The University offers a course with 6 modules of 1 credit in which issues concerning the transition from basic research to applied research and the financing of applied research will be studied; the enhancement of research results and intellectual property, the protection of intellectual property, the filing of patents, the creation of businesses and spin-offs and business planning techniques.

Experimental, method in agriculture

  • (3 CFU; 20 hours in collaboration with the PhD in Agricultural Sciences and with second year students of the degree in Sustainable Agriculture)

Exploitation and dissemination of results, intellectual property and open access to data and research products

1. Event called "Game of research" organized by the non-tenure staff of the Department of Veterinary Medicine where PhD students can take advantage of a showcase and communicate the results of their activities.

2. "Modern Science Communication: Effective ideas and tools to represent data and deliver results" in collaboration with PhD in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences and Biotechnology

Part of the training credits awarded will be chosen by the student, defined in agreement with the tutor and approved by the PhD Academic Board.

PhD students follow two types of training courses: a specific and personalized one, based on research and individual study under the supervision of one or more tutors; the other, common to all members, based on courses and cycles of seminars.

PhD students are included in the existing working groups. The student can, according to the decisions of the Academic Board, follow internships and courses at other structures in Italy or abroad. Collaborative relationships between doctoral students are stimulated in carrying out research projects. For this purpose, regular meetings are scheduled between doctoral students and tutors aimed at exchanging practical experiences and theoretical knowledge.

Numerous agreements are in place with universities, public bodies and private offices.
